Chapter 13: Smoke Break

After leaving the coffee shop, the team made their way through the last few blocks of the neighborhood between them and the storage facility. Halfway there, they heard the faint rumble of an approaching engine. The five of them scattered like roaches at the sound. Reggie and Kayla climbed up a solid, bushy tree, Bethany and Patrick jumped into a boat on a trailer, and Dez slid underneath the SUV it was hitched to. A vehicle cruised past their spot at high speed on the main road just next to them. None of them could see it from their vantage points, but they all heard it and felt the presence of danger brushing by. The gang stayed quiet from there until they reached their destination.

Once they arrived, Patrick looked up to a darkening sky as Reggie worked to undo the lock of his storage unit. “Looks like we’ve got maybe thirty minutes before it starts to rain. Is that enough time for us to load up and get back on the boat? Would it be smart to be out on the ocean during a thunderstorm?”

“Just cool it with the questions for a minute, I’ve almost got it. There-” Reggie pulled out the lock and yanked the door up with a rusty squeal that sounded so impossibly loud that for a few seconds everyone just stared at each other wincing.

“What the hell, Reggie? I thought we were trying to keep a low profile here!” Dez hissed.

“How was I to know it would do that? It didn’t squeak last time or the time before that. It wasn’t that loud anyway. Y’all are just jumping at shadows, scared of the boogeyman.”

Patrick shook his head, “Boogey men , Reg. There’s at least four of those crazy bastards. You heard what those kids said about them. Don’t be dense. We’ve got a situation and we need to figure out how to handle it, but I suggest we get our asses inside and get that door closed now. Just in case they heard that so-loud-I-swear-to-God-it-echoed sound you just made.” He smiled thinly and gestured indoors.

“You are one snarky SOB; you know that?” Reggie muttered as he stepped inside. They brought the door down slowly behind them and it squeaked less, but also plunged the room into total darkness. Reggie lit his zippo, found an electric lantern nearby and switched it on. They all took off their gas masks as soon as they could see.

Patrick sighed, “I’m sorry bro, I’m just freaking out right now. I mean, what are we gonna do? We can’t take any of this stuff with us while maniacs are roaming the streets like savages, shooting at everything that moves. You know, I always thought the whole ‘raider gangs popping up within days of a zombie apocalypse’ angle was weak. The Dead Rising series, in particular, seemed unbelievable to me. I always told myself that real people wouldn’t willingly plunge down to that level of total anarchy the very instant they were given a chance to.
